Sweet'n'Sour

Gina Matchitt

Tuesday 21 July - 15 August

In 2008 Gina took up an artist's residency at CAMAC (Centre d’art Marnay Art Centre) located an hour from Paris in the village of Marnay-sur-Seine in the scenic region of Champagne-Ardenne.

In this multi-disciplinary environment she developed ideas around food culture.

The exhibition weaves together images of food from the markets and restaurants of France with Maori whole food and cooking. Particular weaving patterns that represent food symbols - flounder, whitebait - are used.

Some of the work in the exhibition connects to Gina's computer key panels from E kare you're so colonised (see Patisserie below) but other works go off in new directions - Cheese Royale and Happy Meal - engaging directly with food photography and using the shapes of food-packing to abstract the subject matter and suggest other images.
