Waka Huia

Areta Wilkinson

Wednesday 24 June - 18 July

Waka Huia is a treasure trove of collected pesonal stories with wider cultural resonances symbolised by adornments that will themselves generate further narratives.

Areta creates a multi-layered space using jewellery forms from many different origins, meanings, and recorded stories.

The waka huia of the title is a receptacle for everyday and special objects associated with adornment and spirituality. It customarily held jewellery and other personal items that had become tapu due to their close association with their wearer.

In keeping with universal understandings of body adornment, each piece in Areta's Waka huia is an object of inscribed memory celebrating 'extraordinary' ordinary moments.
