Can you see what I see

Lonnie Hutchinson

Thursday 28 May - 20 June

This exhibition brings together some new work and some old. Lonnie's work investigates her dual Samoan Maori heritage and communicates ideas about indigenous and cultural identity.

But she is as influenced by pop and hip hop culture as much as by Polynesian art forms. Her new work (see Untitled below) shows these influences more strongly.

Lonnie's wall-mounted cut-outs have become her signature style. Inspired by elaborate interlacing of Maori and Samoan patterns, she became known for her intricate patterns cut out of black builders paper.

Her work more recently has been made from laser-cut acrylic. The process involves scanning paper templates and programming them for the laser cutter to cut out of acylic. See installation shot below for two works made from laser cut acrylic.
