Pimp My Planet

Simon Shepheard

Wednesday 10 September - 04 October

"I've been producing work consistently for the last 20 - 30 years - constructing mostly paintings and assemblages, but also animations and videos. When I started there was considerable social stigma around the materials I used (and still is). They were familiar vehicles, but wrangled out of their consumer comfort zones into challenging combinations where new politics might be revealed. That approach was eventually absorbed into a cultural tsunami beyond art where materials came to be seen in a more objective light - rather than just the consumer polarities of 'new' or 'junk'. My recent work still tends to exploit redemptive elements, otherwise ignored, within discarded materials and objects. Now they're re-realised into bleakishly appealing New Zealand environscapes - high relief paintings, often kinetic or containing some transcendental stunt, perhaps glistening materials like paua or metal parts. These are figuratively absorbed into the landscape, implying some kind of environmental tension from years of human excess."
