Happy Camper

Tom Sladden

Wednesday 25 June - 19 July

“I come from a long line of campers, and before that we were settlers. And of course we are a nation of settlers. Our forebears made a very deliberate decision to be here. Somewhere down the track there was an enormous leap of faith taken by someone into the unknown. The work in Happy Camper looks at re-settling. There is a sparseness to these paintings. Much has been left out – in some instances they just seem to be getting 'off the ground'.

“We camp each year to satisfy our settler-psyche. We like to stake our claim etc. This work is very much a vehicle for pegging out some artistic terrain to work within. These aren't landscape paintings, but 'psychological landscapes' – places you won’t find on a map.”

The exhibition includes two backlit paintings (see the large scale Ohui 1 (2415 x 1610mm) below), a sculptural rework of the campfire, and a series of paintings.
