Fleischblume

Sandra Schmidt

Tuesday 04 March - 29 March

Fleishblume is a made-up word grouping two German words together to create a new idea. Translated as ‘meat flower’, it refers to Schmidt’s way of working – grouping materials and ideas into new configurations. Here flower or plant-creatures are suggested. Their actual form is ambiguous but something about their configuration hints at living things.
The exhibition features Schmidt’s trademark approach of combining small identical units that she builds up into wall works. There are works made from Hama beads – a children’s craft material – some backlit while others are hung directly on the wall. Other works are made of small wooden elements that combine in three-dimensional constructions emerging from the wall.
