Turangawaewae

Moana Nepia

Wednesday 30 August - 16 September

The images are also informed by Moana's background as a former dancer with the NZ Ballet and current choreographic projects.
Nepia says “Turangawaewae is a place to identify with, a place to be spiritually and physically at home… who are we if such a place is denied or taken away? When I lived in Wellington in the 1980’s, I would sometimes walk home from the Opera house or Ballet Company in Vivian Street, up Cuba Street, past a woman with a very deep voice, in a large fur coat and high heels. She would step out from her doorway to ask, with an upward inflection…business?” It’s nearly twenty years since I left Wellington, I doubt if I could recognise the doorway now and have often wondered what happened to her. Meanwhile Cuba Street and Vivian Street have both changed dramatically. It’s also twenty years since the introduction of the homosexual law reform bill. All of these things are captured in our turangawaewae” he said.
