Awatea

Rangi Kipa
Gina Matchitt
Moana Nepia

Saturday 07 May - 27 May

AWATEA featured the work of Gina Matchitt, Moana Nepia and Rangi Kipa.
Gina Matchitt’s work embraces has been obessed with circles, spots and dots from previous work. “I really liked how the traditional patterns tukutuku and taniko translated in a modern, almost Walters-esque way. Generally I am interested in the cross-over between traditional and contemporary concepts and the ways in which Maori art continually evolves” she said. Rangi Kipa and Moana Nepia take a similar approach. Kipa makes hei tiki in traditional forms using brightly coloured resins. Nepia takes traditional cloaks as his starting point recreating the patterned feathered surfaces without weaving.
Awatea means dawn or the change from night to day.
