Velvet Nightmares

Gary Freemantle

Tuesday 18 July - 05 August

Based on a historical style of portraiture seen in Spain during the Renaissance, the exhibition comprises a series of portraits which use theatrical poses to evoke emotional states and unlikely scenarios. With their black backgrounds and darkly-clad characters, the paintings concentrate the viewer’s eye on the mood of the figure – some are contemplative in a vampirish way, others openly aggressive and menacing.
Freemantle's work often updates historical genres - car portraits on velvet, landscapes like film strips, landscapes in mud, urban landscapes. Technically there are few New Zealand artists, who can push paint around with this degree of skill.
