Nautical but Nice

Octavia Cook
Megan Hansen-Knarhoi
Gavin Hurley

Wednesday 07 June - 24 June

The show includes a range of brooches and cameos by Octavia Cook as Cook & Co. “The cameos images come from a group of cameos I have been working on which have nautical/sailors' tattoo references (such as the parrot, anchor and skull) or from my Cook & Co monogram (the octopus, bow and crown) or related themes such as “O Cook” and “Captain Cook” said Cook. “Cook & Co invite you to peruse a splendid display of motif and monogram cameos from the family collection”.
Megan Hansen-Knarhoi best known for her crotcheted works, has produced a series of crotched “boobs” thinking of ship moles or perhaps a shipment of boobs. “It is within my character and artistic practice to lean more toward the naughty side of nice” she said. “The boobs all have a different serial number added to the generic title 'White Boob/Black Boob' - the serial number relating to the old Semco patterns I have used for the cameo lacing around the boobs... but also refer to some imaginary technical ship log jargon.”
Along with his large scale paintings, Gavin Hurley cut-outs have also become something of a signature for him. Originally producing the cut-outs to develop compositions for larger portraits, they began to take on a life of their own. Nautical but Nice includes a series of twelve cut-outs – images with text. Some have historical references to Captain James Cook and read like nineteenth century advertisements while others evoke a tongue-in-cheek fifties kitsch aesthetic.
