Another Pretty Ugly* Collection

Simon Shepheard

Simon Shepheard's new exhibition continues his interactive experiments daring the viewer to engage with the work more physically. Using abandoned materials including old surf boards and well, just old surf boards, Shepheard takes their grains and stains, peeling paint and cracks as pre-existing history and incorporates them into his own landscape contraptions and kinetic narratives
“I enjoy time fermented patinas, flaky clouds of blistered dulux, the colour of rough sawn rimu. They allow me to play with the idea that beauty and ugliness are aesthetically closer than we think especially when it come to junk” he said.
“Paua insets and dirt become alternative pigment. I’m interested in how material reacts to light. Paua contains radium. It pools light and manifests pure colours in changing conditions. All materials have a kind of spiritual relationship with light so their salvation is often in that context.”
