Splice

Victor Berezovsky

Tuesday 04 April - 22 April

Consisting of a series of large austere black and white drawings in ink on paper, Splice condenses many of Berezovsky’s previous themes and formal interests - in the human form, in oppositions and dualities, in viscerality and spatial ambiguity etc. These previous interests are "boiled down" to single emblematic images whose vibrating wobbliness undermine the surety of the steadfast corporate logo or icon. These are the anti-logos - pulsating, fragile, vulnerable and humane.
“The work is organic in substance and meaning” Berezovsky said. “It grows in different directions, contracts and expands. I tried to allow the image to hold aspects of the ideas and feelings I was grasping towards but avoided specific meaning.”
“I think we are always searching for something hidden or merely potential or hypothetical, following its traces whenever they appear on the surface… The word connects the visible trace with the invisible thing, the absent thing, the thing that is despised or feared, like a frail emergency bridge flung over an abyss.” Italo Calvino from "Six Memos for the Next Millenium: the Charles Eliot Norton Lectures 1985-86", Harvard University Press, p77.
