Bunny Chasers

Victoria Birkinshaw

Wednesday 22 February - 11 March

What she found on her travels was less about lamé. “After seeing the TV image which seemed so at odds with what I knew of racing, I wanted to establish the reality of this picture. When I’d been to a number of race meets, I realised it didn’t exist but I became fascinated with the interaction between the dogs and their owners. This and trying to understand what drove people’s involvement became important aspects to the project” Birkinshaw said.
“There is a certain romance to greyhound racing – people training a dog to a level where it is able to go out on to the track alone, without someone on it’s back, and using its instincts, win a race. And of course there’s the money. Large stakes can be involved.”
It wasn’t until her final race meet, the $75,000 race of the year at Addington Raceway, Christchurch, that she finally saw something glitter on the racetrack. “Before really big races, the dogs are paraded in an arena wearing special lamé coats with gold tassel trim lead by their trainers and a marching girl holding up a placard with the dog’s race number. This was the penultimate moment for me. I had found my dog-man with the glam girl and her placard. The project was officially over.”
