Drawings

Catherine Bagnall
Julian Bishop

Tuesday 31 January - 19 February

As avid trampers, Catherine Bagnall and Julian Bishop have been using their forays into the bush as a subject for some time. The bush provides a metaphor for a parallel universe.
Drawings presents furniture, video, sound and clothing which explore the possibilities of entering into this world.
"In our recent collaborative work, we have been working with video, sound, furniture and clothing to explore a new or parallel environment from which to view our relationship to the 'wilderness' landscape. We are interested in the point where there is a possibility for transformation, metamorphosis or slippage between one reality and into another. If we slip into this parallel landscape, can we see ourselves as part of an environment that we usually consider to be the 'other'? Any way of looking at nature that encourages us to believe we are separate from it - as wilderness tends to do - must help reinforce our attitude of environmentally irresponsible behaviour. But what happens if we become absorbed by our surroundings? And can clothing, furniture and video activate this point of transformation.
In our earlier collaborative work we began to explore these ideas by setting up theatre-like exhibitions where the viewer was expected to used their own experiences and memories to 'activate' the work. We are interested in now populating the exhibition space with character[isations] in 'animal' suits that communicate with the viewer. The video and sound backdrops offer the viewer a conduit or at least a dialogue with the 'other' space inhabited by these characters or the chance of absorption into this space."
