Tuesday 15 February - 05 March

Pond Life with Mary Macpherson, Megan Hansen-Knarhoi, Shelley Norton and Andrea du Chatenier opened on 15 February. Encompassing work across a range of media including photography, crotchet, plastic bags and cardboard, Pond Life shows the variety of materials currently employed by contemporary artists.
Wellington photographer Mary Macpherson has developed a series of photographic works, At Sea. These are playful photographs using constructed ‘sets’ to explore the sea as a metaphor – for travel, the unconscious, leisure.
“Most of the models in the work came from aquariums and speciality stores” she said. “One of the reasons I like working with them is the disjuncture between working with quite serious ideas and a figure that looks like it fell through several galaxies to land in your cereal packet.”
Peppermint Piety by Megan Hansen-Knarhoi is made up of thirty-three individual ‘cuddly’ crosses. “I got the idea for the work from reading 'The Devil's Advocate' by Morris West” she says. “Peppermint Piety refers to people who call themselves Christians yet only adhere to certain parts of the faith that are suited to their needs (people tend to like the pepperminty sweet bits), whilst ignoring others. So you could say that with this piece I am playing the devil's advocate... “
Shelley Norton ‘knits’ jewellery and objects from recycled plastic bags. “Jewellery with its signification around wealth and status, has provided an enjoyable entry point into the construction of meaning” she said.
Andrea du Chatenier works in many different media. Included in Pond Life are works from her Pod series – chicken and horses-head suit/masks – as well as an installation work from her Log series.
