The Abstract Walking Club

Catherine Bagnall
Julian Bishop

Wednesday 26 January - 12 February

For the last three years Catherine Bagnall has been tramping through the national parks of New Zealand wearing old wedding dresses and ball dresses –clothing not usually associated with tramping.
In collaboration with partner Julian Bishop, The Abstract Walking Club, takes a tramp through local mountains and a recent walk through an Austrian forest.
Bagnall explains "I set up experiments in ‘sensibility’ not usually associated with landscape. I climbed Mount Owen in a white brocade-lined wedding dress with a full circle skirt and walked through the Outerere crater with my hands in a fur muff. I am interested in the joy and humour, the sensation of being in the bush luxuriously dressed. In the photographs I see a woman part-animal, part-landscape, part-garment. I inhabit another place."
The exhibition includes works made in collaboration with Bishop while on an artist’s residency in Austria. These sculptural objects including a backpack, chair and animal suit have transformative qualities which evoke experiences of landscapes – real or imagined. “The chair is portable and alludes to the possibility of sitting quietly in a landscape or thinking about a fictional landscape.” Bagnall said.
