Speedway

Victoria Birkinshaw

Friday 24 December - 25 January

A beaten-up rally car parked on the Hutt motorway prompted Wellington photographer Victoria Birkinshaw to visit Te Marua Speedway in Upper Hutt.
After her first meet she was hooked. She went on to make countless visits over 9 months mostly to Te Marua but also Auckland, Rotorua, Matamata and Wanganui Speedways to photograph the characters, the smoke, the dust and the rough beauty of speedway racing.
“The speedway is like another world. It has its own culture and code of behaviour. I wanted to represent it in a beautiful and engaging way” said Birkinshaw.
“The media is full of speedway images and we are used to seeing them. Victoria goes beyond documenting the speedway bringing a painter’s eye to her subjects” said gallery co-director Mary-Jane Duffy. “With their dramatic lighting and melodrama, it’s Carravaggio meets Evil Knevil. The speedway has never looked so luscious or so thoughtful.”
