Rear View Mirror

Bryan Dew

Tuesday 12 July - 30 July

Rear View Mirror opened at the Mary Newton Gallery on 12 July and features the work of ex-pat Bryan Dew, best known for his sixties' ‘social satire’ paintings now in the collections of the Auckland Art Gallery, the Hocken Library and the Hawkes Bay Museuem. In Rear View Mirror, Dew takes events and incidents from his early years and presents them as iconic moments (as indeed they were) for the Hawkes Bay and more generally, for New Zealand. There's the Queen’s visit, the opening of the Watties factory, the end of the Second World War and nascent nationalism. So while this exhibition is based around ‘the Bay’, the images speak of wider issues of nationhood with an edge of humour and nostalgia. There is a glimpse of that utopian dream of fifties and early sixties New Zealand as an endless summer's afternoon.
