Duck!

Jarad Bryant
John Roy
Tom Sladden

Tuesday 25 May - 19 June

John Roy's kooky ceramic works revel in awkwardness. New work made for the exhibition introduces imagery around denial and having 'your head in the sand'. The figures are literally 'stuck' in their refusal - the wind has changed direction and they are never going to be the same...

Tom Sladden is also interested in the human condition. "These works are all the same subject, that hasn't really changed for my painting for a few years now. They are still commenting on the human condition and what it is to be a part of it. I'm not sure there is much else to paint about, so maybe I'm not terribly original on that front. But what is nice, is to be painting things again.... hulls, battery-chargers, fire, remote-controls, hedges, smoke....these are the tangibles that belong to us."

"I think my paintings are becoming more 'man-made' which is ok. Nature has moved into the back seat in terms of where I focus my thoughts, but it still occasionally peeks its head around the corner. I still spend a large proportion of my time (maybe 90%), working out what not to paint...where not to go etc."

Jarad Bryant has been thinking about how to identify the “vague” and “unsure” and how to offer them as tangible sculptural forms. "I have been investigating the stereotypical or archetypal and how these can be unconsciously embodied in everyday events/outcomes, and personal or group narratives.
