The House of Lentigo

Lauren Lysaght

Wednesday 28 April - 22 May

Lentigo - the technical name for a freckle. Age spots are called either Solar Lentigo or Lentigo Senilis.

Like all good ruins, I look better by moonlight - Phyllis Diller

"When I set out to make this new work about aging it was very difficult to stay with positive imagery. It was far easier to go down the road of negativity - and there is so much negative stuff about aging out there!

So I set an agenda for the work - it was only to focus on the positive. I wanted to create a series of dignified works for older people. I decided to look at age spots and thought the leopard offered a powerful metaphor in relation to this. Does a Leopard ever change its spots?

So here is my House of Lentigo. The work starts with an Ancient Ruin where I imagined many a battle has been fought... and there's a garden where the Fountain of Youth has ceased to be.

From there I made a three-dimensional structure that is the home of the Leopard of Lentigo. It is caged but covered in beautiful crystal spots. Then I created some images of the Countess Leopardina Senilis of Lentigo. She stares proudly at the viewer - she is not afraid of her spots!

But before she came to terms with her spots she still longed for her lost youth. She became La Luna Lentigo howling at the moon. But now she gazes into her hand mirror and sees a powerful creature emerging.

And finally I made three small mementos to carry about so we never forget being older is also powerful!

And in the immortal words of Bette Davis - Old age ain’t no place for sissies!"
