Rulers

Gavin Hurley
Sam Mitchell

Wednesday 16 September - 10 October

Back in 2001 One Night Only at the Gus Fisher Gallery, was the first collaborative project by Gavin Hurley and Sam Mitchell. Gavin's intricately collaged portraits provide the ground or skin for Sam's imaginative doodles.

Rulers combines recent joint works as well as solo endeavours by both artists as they revisit some of their favourite figureheads.

Mitchell's Rulers include American Presidents Abraham Lincoln and John F Kennedy - even Michael Jackson (King of Pop) makes an appearance.

These portraits are produced as water colours and as paintings on perspex.

Hurley includes selected collages from his 2009 publication "A-Z" and reaffirms the relationship between his collages and painted versions of more local subjects such as Governor George Grey and Charles Heaphy.

This is Gavin and Sam's second two-man show with Mary Newton Gallery following their 2008 exhibition Beardy.
