Double Negative

Dale Anthony
Tanja Nola

Tuesday 19 April - 06 May

Double Negative featured the work of two ex-Wellingtonians, Tanja Nola and Dale Anthony. Combined they presented a spooky vision.
Nola’s series of photographic works entitled Sightings, explore the fundamental elements of the photographic medium – light, chemistry and subject. Sightings return to the early days of photography and the Victorian obsession with recording the paranormal. They use the illusions and trickery of this period but also reference thriller movies and suggest auras, haloes and poltergeists.
The fibre-based silver gelatine prints are enhanced with hand colouring, the surfaces etched with the chemistry, dyes and oils.
Anthony’s expertly controlled ink drawings are also dark and brooding. In some the imagery is menacing and primal evoking the darker forces of nature and the aesthetics of chaos. In others the irrational is positioned as visionary and uplifting – the darkness is submerged by fluid colour and light.
